The 9 th Annual KWiSE West Coast Conference was held at California Institute of technology (Caltech), Beckman Institute Auditorium, Pasadena, California on Saturday, May 16, 2015 from 9 am to 4 pm. With the title of “ Meeting of Art and Science, Reaching out to the Younger Generation and Networking”, approximately 56 participants attended the conference including members from San Diego Chapter and members of Young Generation members. The researchers who have been actively performing cutting edge researches in greater Los Angeles Area gave talks on their interdisciplinary researches applying science and technology in medicine, art, education, and other areas. The conference began with KWiSE overview by Dr. Haejung An, briefly introducing the past activities of KWiSE and envisioning future direction of KWiSE and the role of women scientists and engineers. As always, it was very pleasant and engaging moment with her great speech. Congratulatory Remark was provided by the president of USA Korean Film Council, who encompassed the magic of bridging the art and science. The keynote speaker of this conference, Dr. David W. Gjertson (Professor, UCLA, Biostatistics and Pathology), gave a talk on “Prognostic Factors in Organ”. His research focuses on applying statistical analysis in identifying matching donor and recipient for organ transplantation, which will significantly facilitate successful donorrecipient matching process and also decrease rejection rate upon surgery. The audience was all impressed that statistical analysis and its application can be used as a key tool to significantly improve the quality of surgery and patient care. The morning session was lined up with interesting talks given by two young women scientists; Dr. Hyowon Ban (Assistant Professor, Cal State Long Beach, Geography) gave a talk on “Representation of Spatial Information in Geographic Information Science”, in which she demonstrated how geographic tool could be used to monitor dancing movement. Dr. Ning Wang (Research Scientist, USC ICT, Computer science) gave a talk on “From Virtual Humans to Robots: Developing Socially Intelligent Technology for Learning and Communication” and introduced new virtual tool and robots that will be widely used as pedagogical tools. During the lunch break, the participants enjoyed wonderful Korean box lunch at the Beckman courtyard. Fun networking activity led by Dr. Minhee Ko (UCLA) and Dr. Hyunsook Park (Cal State LA) encouraged all the participants to introduce themselves and to connect with other peer scientists and potential mentors. The participants were divided into five groups, in which consist of 89 people and introduce them to the group members. Afterward, the participants were given fun quizzes linking the members in each group and the quiz winners received prizes. The participants also took brief moment to be connected with potential mentors. It was a great opportunity, in particular for young generations, who seek for guidance how to pursue for their future career. The afternoon session continued with interesting research talks by two women scientists; Dr. Julia Campbell (Project Director, USC ICT, Education and Cognitive Psychology) gave a talk on “Virtually Speaking: The Science and Art of Developing Virtual Human Training Platforms”. Her presentation highlighted virtual agents that have been developed and tested in various areas including army training and counseling. Dr. Grace Hyun Kim gave a talk on “Quantitative Lung Fibrosis Score in Interstitial Lung Disease”. She also emphasized the role of statistical approach in analyzing and diagnosing lung diseases from CT scanned image. Lastly, Mr. Brian Lee (AMERITS financial solutions) provided information on “Tax free Retirement for Professionals”.
