A brief history of KWiSE@TX…

We launched our first networking event on Dec. 16, 2014, which consisted of a group of female scientists from Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). On Feb, 11, 2015, we officialized our group in KSEA as “Korean Women in Science at Texas Medical Center (KWiS@TMC)”.

As a sub-chapter in the KSEA South Chapter, we volunteered at the NMSC (National Mathematics & Science Competition) held on April 18, 2015.

On November 14, 2015, Korean Women in Science at the Texas Medical Center (KWiS@TMC) officially became the 7th Chapter of KWiSE during the annual Korean-American Bio-Medical Scientists Symposium (KABMS). Former president of KWiSE and a Plenary speaker for the KABMS, Dr. Eun Suk Seo (Univ. of Maryland) came to inaugurate this important milestone.

As of 2019, we are now KWiSE@TX to include female scientists and engineers from Texas A&M University in College Station, TX.

We are a networking organization that fosters scientific collaborations and the professional growth of women working in the various institutes in Texas. We hold regular meetings and organize various events, including scientific lectures, career development seminars, and social events. To promote our networking among our members and stimulate scientific excellence, we have encouraged the members to introduce their research field. On May 18, 2019, we successfully hosted the 4th Annual Conference. This year’s speakers include Drs. Ji Young Yoo (UT HSC), Ohbet Cheon (HMRI), Kyungsoon Chung (UTMB), Betty Kim, (MD Anderson), and Jihye Yun (BCM).

We hope to further extend our networking among scientists in basic science, translational science, and the business sector. In this collaborative intellectual environment, we will strive for excellence in our work and hope to contribute to the TMC community and beyond.
