Student Video Competition for Florence Nightingale Day 2020

Description: KWISE is hosting a student video competition as part of our Florence Nightingale Day celebration. Students are given the opportunity to apply their knowledge in statistics and science to promote community health and wellbeing in the context of the current pandemic. Students are encouraged to submit a short, educational, and informative video that will appeal to their peers. There is no fee to participate in the competition, although a separate registration is required.

Eligibility: Students in US grades 6-12 (or equivalent). Students can participate individually or as a team (maximum three students per team).

Award: First place (1 entry) $300

Second place (2 entries) $200

Third place (3 entries) $100

Honorable mention (10 entries)   $30  

Evaluation criteria: 

  • Related to COVID-19 
  • Creative and engaging
  • Appealing to a young audience
  • Use of relevant statistical and scientific knowledge

Submission requirement: Please submit the following items via an email to FN.KWiSE@gmail.com

  • an unlisted (but not requiring sign-in) YouTube link to a (max. 3 min.) video produced by the participant; 
  • a 2 page summary of the video content; 
  • a letter of recommendation by a science/math/statistics teacher or the principal of the school that the student is attending. 

The video content should be an original, unpublished product that has not been submitted elsewhere. Each participant or team can submit only one (1) entry.   

The written summary should include: title; name(s) of the participant(s); school affiliation; contact information; one paragraph abstract; description of how the video content can help achieve the objective; and references. This should be in Times New Roman and 12 pt. font, and the maximum length of the document should be 2 pages (plus references). 

The video should not contain copyrighted material beyond permissible by law. Please refer to the explanation of “fair use” of copyrighted material in the following link: Fair Use information page

If selected, the participant will be awarded a cash prize; a limited number of videos will be broadcast as a part of the award ceremony at the event. Upon selection, the awardees agree to allow ASA, CWS, and KWiSE to use a portion of, or the entire video for noncommercial and promotional purposes, including posting and linking to websites.
