The Korean-American Women in Science and Engineering (KWiSE) and the Association of Korean Women Scientists & Engineers (KWSE) hosted the KWiSE-KWSE Joint forum on December 17th and 18th for two days at UKC 2021.

The forum’s main purpose was to share the success stories of multi-country webinar programs initiated previously and foster further collaboration and networking among women scientists and engineers in the United States, Canada, and Korea.

Hyo-Suk Lim (KWSE President) and Jayoung Kim (KWiSE President) opened the forum, the co-chairs of the forum. Dr. Mihyeon Jeon (KWiSE Vice President) and Dr. Jinah Park (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) administered and moderated the forum on-site from US and Korea.

After the brief welcome and greetings from Dr. Lim and Dr. Kim, the program moved forward with two technical presentations. First, Dr. Jinah Kim (Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology) presented “Deep Learning for Understanding Ocean-Atmosphere-Climate Phenomena.” Dr. Sungsil Moon (Centers of Disease Control and Prevention) then presented on “Climate Change and Infectious Disease.”

Next, the program continued with a panel discussion around Global Networking with Korea and USA. Dr. Mihyeon Jeon (Atkins) began the panel discussion, presenting on “Invaluable Human Interactions through Networking and Active Participation in Professional Organizations” sharing her 14-year professional experience insights.

The following three presentations were about collaborative webinar programs in the US, Canada, and Korea. First, Dr. Jinyoung Jeong (Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology) presented on “2020-2021 KWSE-KWiSE Joint Web-Seminar: the Past, Present, and Future.” Dr. Dong-Yun Kim (National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute) then presented “Experience from KWiSE Forum Series: COVID-19.” Lastly, Dr. Eun-Young Choi (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) presented “Networking through Webinar between Korea and Canada: One Year Performance and Development Direction.”

After the presentations, we exchanged comments and ideas about further collaboration opportunities among women scientists and engineers worldwide. In addition, Dr. Gang-Wook Lee, the 37th KSEA president, attended this forum in person and emphasized how vital such technical and social collaboration among scientists and engineers is.
