Korean-American Women in Science and Engineering (KWiSE) and Korea Federation of Women’s Science & Technology (KOFWST) hosted the Women’s Forum entitled “How to Manage Covid-19 Burnout.”

This forum is open to both genders, and its goal is to exchange ideas on how to promote and empower women scientists in the various STEM fields, and to share information on education and policy needed for this process.

Burnout Syndrome among women scientists and engineers in the US

The presentation highlighted the current lack of knowledge on burnout syndrome among women scientists and engineers and presented burnout survey results from data collected among US KWiSE members. Survey results showed that quality of life and effectiveness and productivity at work were all negatively impacted by COVID. The severity of the impact varied by major, age, career path, rank, and length of time in the US. Our results highlight the need for further research and to allocate funds and resources to support women scientists and engineers to build resilience in the community.

Burnout Syndrome among women scientists and engineers in Korea

The presentation illustrated current status of burnout among women scientists and engineers in Korea. Various strategies in tackling burnout syndrome at personal, organizational, and community levels were discussed. Available resources were presented for the audience to utilize to better manage psychological stressors that impact women scientists and engineers due to COVID.

Burnout Syndrome among women scientists and engineers in Asia-Pacific   Region

Qualitative data on experiences of burnout syndrome among women scientists and engineers in Tasmania, Australia were presented. Experience from various ranks was shared, ranging from department head to doctoral students. It was apparent that burnout syndrome was felt in all levels of rank and was especially impactful for those who were living abroad, separate from their family.

KWiSE-KOFWST forum will provide an environment for open discussion and nurturing partnerships and friendships. The forum is designed to be an interactive and engaging event to foster networking and mentoring among the attendees. It will be an excellent opportunity to learn and get inspiration from each other to allow women scientists and engineers to engage effectively as leaders and active participants in the near future.
